Qualities of a "good" documentary

All documentaries have one main point or goal which usually either informs, or educates an audience on a particular topic and or subject. With all the pioneers in filmmaking nowadays, there are several distinct differences between a well shot documentary and a poorly shot one. A good documentary is very informative and includes not only reliable sources, but valid sources. For example, if your documentary is covering the events of Pearl Harbor, wouldn't it make more sense to discuss the issues as they occurred with someone who was present, instead of either looking up the info online or asking someone who is a secondary source to the event? A poor documentary will usually not dig deep enough in research. Another aspect of a good documentary includes camera editing. With technology that is used in the film industry these days, documentaries and movies around the world are becoming to crisp and well edited. Camera cuts are smooth and seamless and it seems as if the documentary was a costly production even though most are all low budget films. The most important part of a good documentary is the information the audience takes away after the film is over. This is the most key aspect of the documentary process because the entire point of documenting something is to gather research and information to share with the general population. Documentaries seem to appear out of no where these days, but these key features set certain films apart from the rest.

Mary Todd Lincoln House

This house is a little piece of significant history within the city of downtown Lexington. Some of you may know about it already, but this Georgian style house was originally built to serve as an inn, but it was then purchased by the family of Mary Todd, the soon to be husband of the famous American president Abraham Lincoln. The house itself is very peculiar and has its own bits of history added in the mix as well. Construction on the house began around 1803 and was finished around 1806. It ended up serving many purposes, one being a brothel. An interesting fact about the house is that Belle Brezing was working lady at the brothel and eventually she became a nationally known madam. The unusual history about this story is the fact that Belle Brezing inspired author Margaret Mitchell's character Belle Watling in the American classic "Gone with the Wind." Abraham Lincoln himself stepped foot in this very house, along with his children. It is one piece of preserved land in downtown Lexington that gives the city a hint of classic American history to its now modernized community.

WT Young

Many people pass this structure several times a day. Most people know what it is and what its used for, but for the people who do not, this is William T. Young Library. It is the biggest library on campus and its history dates back to the mid 70's when William Young, a prominent businessman, started donating money (5 million dollars) to the school for renovations, building, activities, etc. In 1994, the construction of the library began and was dedicated in April of 1998 as the schools most expensive project on campus totaling out to 58 million dollars. Overall this is a very important and elaborate building on the campus of UKY and is greatly appreciated by all students and staff on campus in Lexington.

Visit to Wildcat Statue

Overall my group had a nice visit to the Wildcat Statue. We learned it was constructed and donated to the school in 2012, but did not learn its full purpose. The group noticed names of alumni, school faculty, and current students on the bricks surrounding the statue. Still questions arose such as "Why was the statue donated?", "What is the statues purpose?", and "What does the statue mean or represent?". These questions still remain unanswered, but may be solved later on in class or outside of class with a little more research. If anyone knows or cares about any of these questions and their answers, feel free to reply.
