Statistics Regarding College Students

This article is going to be a short write up of the actual statistics of things effecting college students today. I have gathered some research which directly correlates to services students may want to take advantage of here at the counseling center at the university. To access services of the counseling center one must first have 6 credit hours which is very obtainable. It has been proven that there is definitely a direct correlation between psychological problems and issues with drugs an alcohol. This puts some students in dangerous situations when they may be mentally unstable, which could in turn lead to problems down the road. There are 4,600 deaths per year caused by alcohol related situations. Many of these can be prevented to it would be best to use the counseling center to your advantage if you feel as if you have any problems. Stress and anxiety seems to take over college students when adjusting to college life. 11.4 percent of college students actually seek help at their university counseling center. This number could be roughly larger if students feel more comfortable in their environment, which is something the university is striving to do. An astounding 62 percent of the students resigned from college due to psychological issues. This number could greatly be decreased if more students stay aware of their problems and the issues of their classmates. In the light of the counseling center, there are many issues that could use more attention than are currently being attended to.

Interview 2

Josh 26 ~ Uk Dining/Janitorial Staff - UK Counseling Center

1) How much do you think students use the counseling center here on campus?
"I would most definitely say a decent amount. I know I used to acquire counseling for some of my own personal problems and this facility is probably used more than most people think."

2) Did you know about the counseling center prior to this interview?
"Yes, I have seen people visit the facility many times and I drive past it daily coming to and from work and on and off campus."

3) Do you know of any services offered at the counseling center?
"I know a few friends of mine who used to attend drug and alcohol counseling there and they received adequate help."

4) Does a counseling center help keep peace and order on campus?
"To a certain extent, yes, because some kids these days have personal problems so deep in which they may attempt to harm themselves or others."

5) Do you believe the counseling center should be student resource or both a student and staff resource?
"I believe it should be available to anyone and everyone in general. Everyone has personal problems and should have some confidential way of dealing with them."

6) Would you feel comfortable enough to use the counseling center if you had any personal problems?
"It honestly just depends because some things to me are so personal that I don't want to share them with anyone even though it would be the right thing to do to get help. It just depends on the situation."

7) Do you think it would be interesting to work in the counseling center?
"For me I think it would be really hard trying to listen to how upset and stressful people's lives are because it would be very challenging to not bring those problems home with you after work."

8)Do you think the students receive all of the resources they need here on campus?
"I think the university does a really good job of providing the needs for its students. Students have virtually any and every resource they could possibly need right here on campus with easy access."

9) Do you know anyone who could use the help of the counseling center?
"Yes I have many friends and family who could use the care of the center, but I am unsure if this resource is available to them."

10) Did this interview help you stay aware of what is available to students on campus?
"Yes it did, but I was already informed of this resource a while back."

Interview 1

Interview with Blake Eriks - UK Counseling Center

1) Did you know as a student here at UK that there even was a counseling center?

"No actually I was not aware that such a resource is available on campus to students."

2) Do you think that having a counseling center here at UK is beneficial to the community?

"Yes it is a very beneficial resource because some students may not feel as if they are getting enough adequate help with personal problems."

3) Do you think the counseling center here at UK is well known to the public?
"I am not entirely sure. I didn't know about it so it could clearly be advertised more carefully so more students are informed."

4) If a friend of yours needed help do you think you would refer him or her to the counseling center?
"It depends on the situation, but yes I definitely would if it could potentially help a friend in need."

5) Do you think you would ever need to use the counseling center for any reason?
"Not as of now, however; knowing about it helps a great deal if I were to have any personal or family issues that I cannot deal with it on my own."

6) Do you have any friends who may need potential counseling help in the future in regards to drugs, alcohol, etc?
"A select few could definitely use some help in regards to self control with alcohol use."

7) Did you know that the counseling center offers help for a variety of issues not just for specific individuals whom may be depressed?
"No I did not, but now I may look deeper into the services offered if the facility isn't just directly targeted towards a specific group of people."

8) Do you think it is important to practice suicide prevention here on campus?
"Yes obviously we do not want to lose any lives and want to promote a positive and healthy environment here on campus."

9) Do you think the counseling center should be available to staff as well?
"Yes I think it is only fair that staff also have the same opportunities and resources that the students do because they are the ones helping us gain our knowledge and education."

10) Do interviews such as this keep you aware of what is available to you on campus as a UK student?
"Yes because I clearly didn't know about this resource before the interview so it does me justice as a student to find out about new things on campus."

Serving Its Students - Uk Counseling Center

Counseling centers on college campuses serve students in many ways. The counseling centers search for various ways to serve its students. They send out a survey in order to create unique help-seeking styles for specific college student populations. Sometimes traditional counseling styles are too conventional and do not serve the needs of its students. The programs offered at the UK Counseling Center are alternative approaches in regards to psycho educational programs. In a university setting many stressful situations occur in which students do not know how to cope. Methods such as consultation, workshops, and presentations are ways students can learn to handle certain situations when transferring into college life. Another thing needed in order to serve its students to its full potential is raising awareness of UK counseling services. Another way UK Counseling Center serves its students is through national personality testing and assessments in order to target the right kind of counseling to your personal needs. Raising awareness of the counseling center is the one thing needed to make it as efficient as possible. Not many people on campus know about the facility, so in order to improve the service of the counseling center we need to make an effort to raise awareness for such a valuable location. The UK Counseling Center is one resource that students need to look into by visiting www.uky.edu/StudentAffairs/Counseling/index.html.

Counseling Center Meets Student Needs

Now that I have found a few programs the counseling center offers, I am going to do research on how this facility helps meet students needs. In our world today, students seem to be struggling with behavioral and emotional health problems at a higher rate than ever before. Counseling centers on college campuses and cities world wide are created in order to help tackle and contain these health problems in order to maintain a healthy living and working environment. Many of these counseling centers use multiple forms of psychotherapy and organizational relationships in order to help students keep students healthy, alert, and able to obtain an education. Without services such as this, many students would have no where to turn to solve personal issues and problems while away from home. With a framework of counseling and planning in place, students will be provided any wants and needs in regards to personal issues and problems. What would one do if he or she had so much anger and depression to built up with no one to turn to? The purpose of the counseling center is to make sure no one student gets to that point. There are many more students with personal problems than one may think because the student often hides away his or her emotions in order to try to act normal or fit in. This counseling center gives students the resources they need in order to help cope with these personal issues and problems in an efficient way. Most people with these personal problems are at risk of deep depression, suicidal thoughts, and detachment. In order to avoid these issues the counseling center will target specific groups of students with a variety of personal problems in order to fit the needs of multiple issues. The UK Counseling Center is an invaluable resource to all students on campus.

UK Counseling Center Services: Drug and Alcohol counseling

On my last blog post I decided to research more into the UK Counseling Center in which I learned a great deal about individual counseling services. Digging a little deeper, I found out another service that everyone needs to know about to ensure the safety of friends and acquaintances around you and the rest of the university. Another confidential service the counseling center offers to UK students is drug and alcohol treatment and prevention. Many students seem to find that drugs and alcohol interfere with personal relationships, school activities, homework, and even studying.  Since it is all confidential, it gives students the opportunity to seek the help they need to ensure everyone is safe. The counseling center posts links on its website of locations in which students can get help near them. This is useful to students because the counseling center may not be able to cater to extensive issues that may require more intensive treatment. Another positive aspect of the drug and alcohol program is the fact that if a friend is having issues, one is able to simply call a hotline and schedule an appointment in the matter of minutes to help their friend out anonymously. The drug and alcohol treatment program is a key part of not only the UK Counseling Center, but also the entire campus as a whole. Students can get the treatment they need to make sure that their grades, lives, and health are in line to ensure a friendly and safe learning environment. Prevention and intervention is key when students lives and safety can potentially be at stake when around drugs and alcohol and consuming drugs and alcohol. I am going to further research into the individual institutions on campus in a later blog post in order to see how the various treatment options work. All in all I it makes me happy to know students at University of Kentucky have the resources required to make sure that everyone receives a good education.

UK Counseling Center : Individual Counseling

Looking further into the UK Counseling Center was something that I had on my mind this week. Many people do not even know of the center at all in the first place just as I did until the subject was brought upon me in class. I decided to do some digging by researching what services the counseling center offered and began focusing on the individual counseling services offered. This service covers a variety of different styles of individual counseling which could potentially relate and help various amounts of people. The most frequent issues regarding individual counseling include depression, anxiety, relationship problems, and uncertainty about choosing a major career. On the other hand there are also individual counseling services for less popular topics such as test anxiety, procrastination, loneliness, homesickness, and even confusion about one's personal identity. Information such as this is something every student on campus should know because everyone has his or her personal problems and many college students have a hard time adjusting to a knew college lifestyle. If more students knew about resources such as this, the campus would be healthier as a college community. Every student deserves a form of confidentiality to make sure everyone lives stable in such a large community. Not everyone may have a specific problem in which they need individual counseling for, however; they have opportunity to speak to someone about issues or problems that may be troubling them. Passing on this knowledge spreads positive influence throughout University of Kentucky's campus, and helps prevent further issues from arriving. Now is the time to help make a difference and create a more healthy and safe community for all of the students and staff in the city of Lexington. Take some time to do a little more research within the UK Counseling Center and you will find more services that could potentially help you or your fellow friends and students.
